Keeping a Political Balance:

One goal of the Common School Movement was to keep a balance in politics between Democrats and Republicans. However, there was some controversy that the public school system leaned more republican in their teachings.

Religion:

One characteristic of the Common School Movement was the inclusion of students regardless of their religious background. Religion was not one of the subjects taught in these public schools, however, the morals taught throughout common schools had many parallels to those in Christian study.
